BNG FRIDAY: The Data Tourist by Davien Thomas

Every Friday until its publication, I'm going to blog something about Brave New Girls: Tales of Girls and Gadgets, a YA sci-fi anthology featuring tech-savvy heroines. The goal is to encourage more girls to enter Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math professions. All revenues from sales of the anthology will be donated to a scholarship fund through the Society of Women Engineers.

Today, I'm spotlighting one of the stories that will be featured in the anthology.

TITLE

The Data Tourist

AUTHOR

Davien Thomas

STORY DESCRIPTION

In the far future, An visits humankind's old homeworld, Earth, to attend a hacker
conference. However, the oppressive regime chokes the flow of information. When An stumbles upon a plot to use bioengineering to control Earth's citizens, she's determined to find a cure for the disease unleashed. With a little knack and a whole lot of rebellion, she sets forth into the unknown.

WHY WE PICKED IT
This one had some awesome world-building. As a lover of cyberpunk, I was really caught up by the imaginative setting plus the intrigue. An's knack for technology makes her a great addition to the anthology's line-up of girls in STEM.

AUTHOR BIO
Davien Thomas is a YA speculative fiction and science fiction author who dabbles occasionally in horror and poetry, but not together. Davien holds a degree in computers and information sciences, but mainly enjoys writing because technology is so important to the future of humankind that everyone should be involved in it.

THOUGHTS ON BRAVE NEW GIRLS
"I chose to contribute to Brave New Girls because fiction is such a strong inspirational force, especially when the societies in which we live do not feed our personal aspirations. I hope that, by featuring more women as role models in fiction, we can change some of our more embedded cultural norms, inspiring men to accept more women in technical fields, and inspiring more women to embrace the idea that there is no good reason their dreams need to be constrained by someone else's cultural norms."
